LOCAL WORKING WOMEN HONOURED BY GOVERNOR-GENERAL VISIT – 19 August 2013

A small Alice Springs community organisation will be honoured on Monday afternoon by a visit by the Governor-General, Her Excellency, the Honourable Quentin Bryce AC CVO. Co-Coordinator of the NT Working Women’s Centre Committee, Rachael Uebergang, said she was delighted to hear of the impending visit and considered it a great honour.

The NT Working Women’s Centre opened in Darwin in 1994.  The Alice Springs office was officially opened in Alice Springs in March 2013 due to funding support from the Commonwealth and NT Governments.  The Governor General visited the NT Working Women’s Centres Darwin office in 2009 and 2012 and is Patron-in-Chief of National Working Women’s Centres.

‘We are delighted that the Governor-General will visit the new NT Working Women’s Centre office in Alice Springs and we are very pleased that she recognises the importance of the work we do in helping women combat issues such as sexual harassment and pregnancy discrimination at work. We are the only free and confidential service of our kind in the NT’.

The Working Women’s Centre will host an invite only afternoon tea with the Governor General.  The Governor General will have the opportunity to discuss the types of workplace issues that are unique to women in the Centre with locally based Industrial Liaison Officer Anne Hebert.

The Centre Coordinator, Rachael Uebergang said, ‘The role of Working Women’s Centres is to raise women’s awareness of their workplace rights and options under current legislative frameworks. The Governor-General has done much in her career to advance the equal rights of women and we expect to have a lot to talk about once again during her visit.’

The NT Working Women’s Centre dealt with over 2,500 contacts in the 2012-2013 year from women all over the NT who have workplace problems. They provide free and confidential information, support and advice to Territory women on work related issues. The main matters which women present with are termination of employment, employment conditions including remuneration, workplace bullying and discrimination.

Women can contact the NTWWC for assistance with a problem at work by calling the freecall number: 1800 817 055.
